Deposit Insurance Scheme

The Deposit Protection Act, 2026 (passed by Parliament on 10 April 2026) replaces the Bank Deposit Insurance Act, 2000. It raises protection from BDT 1,00,000 to BDT 2,00,000 per depositor if a member institution is liquidated, covers scheduled banks and finance companies, and requires the limit to be reviewed every three years. Deposits above the limit can still be claimed from the liquidator.

FDR vs DPS

Fixed Deposit Receipt (FDR): A lump sum deposited for a fixed maturity period.

Deposit Pension Scheme (DPS): A recurring deposit where small monthly installments build up over a long tenure.
